THIS HIGH ALPINE MONUMENT SURROUNDED BY DIXIE NATIONAL FOREST has everything you would expect, from vast meadows filled with wildflowers in the summer to towering conifers, sweeping vistas, grazing mule deer, the occasional black bear, and open views to myriad stars. Set at 10,000 feet, daytime temperatures are cool even in the summer months. In winter the monument is covered in snow.

The real showstopper for this park is the view over the rim. Imagine a giant Creamsicle melting down from the rim onto the slopes below, leaving behind colors of soft orange and cream flowing over the soil and stone in the natural amphitheater. Limestone uplifted over millions of years has eroded into arches, fins, hoodoos, and spires. Most are stained orange by iron oxide pigments, while others have had the iron pigments removed by water, leaving them bleached white.

Many western national and state parks have CCC-built buildings and trails. The CCC was started as part of the New Deal, created to lift the United States out of the Great Depression and give young men a path to success through working within America’s public lands.
